CHARLES VERBRUGGHE
Belgian (1877-1974)

Charles Verbrugghe was born in Bruges, Belgium in 1877. He was a painter of still lifes, landscapes, town views, marines, flowers and portraits. He was born of Belgium aristocracy.

In 1907, he went to Paris to study under the master teacher, Flori Van Acker. There, he became friends with the artists, Utrillo and Kees Van Dongen. During that time, he lived in a house in Montmartre and painted the quaint corners of Paris as well as portraits, still life paintings, views of the sea and beaches, landscapes and flowers. He was well known for painting the convents and city views of Bruges.

Verbrugghe, an impressionist artist, utilized brilliant colors in his paintings and bathed his subjects in voluptuous light. He was highly influenced by the French impressionists he met in Paris.

He died in Paris in 1974.
