Leonie Van Marche Mottard was born in Liege, Belgium in 1862.She was a painter of still-life and flowers. She worked in both mediums of oils and watercolors. Mottard was a student of her father, Edouard Van Marche, the highly respected and known Belgian painter. She also studied with the equally respected artist and master teacher, Catherine Demany. Leonie Mottard was a founding member of the “Societe Nationale des Aquarellistes et Pastellistes”in Brussels and participated in all of the organized exhibits and functions of this society. Starting with 1893, Mottard participated in numerous Triennials in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Liege. She was also admitted as a painter and watercolorist into the “Societe des Artistes” in Paris in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1902.This was quite rare for a female Belgian artist to be admitted into this French Society. She also participated in the International Exposition of Contemporary Artists held in Amsterdam in 1899 and again in 1903.She was also a member of the “Cercle des Beaux Artes de Liege” and a member of the “L’Institut Archeologique” in Liege. Leonie Van Marche Mottard is today considered one of the finest of Belgian still-life artists of her time. Today, her paintings can be found in numerous private and public collections including the Musee de la Vie Wallonie in Liege and in the Musee de Verviers in Belgium. Mottard died in Liege in 1936. |
